rou aux Biches is by far the most sought after beach resort in Mauritius.

It owes its popularity with discerning regular visitors mainly owing to its safe bathing for children, perfect conditions for snorkelling (either in its lagoon or along its reefs), and its fine silver sand. Its amenities include water and other sports (water-skiing, paragliding, snorkelling, sailing, etc), several restaurants and a casino.

A useful local amenity is Popo Supermarket (a small but well stocked grocery store where you can find practically everything from fresh French baguettes to the best wines).

Trou aux Biches boasts several restaurants: from the very popular snack-bar-cum-restaurant-bar where many tourists enjoy the local fare at local prices to the gourmet restaurants all within easy walking distance. If you like Mauritius, you should also consider travel to the Seychelles and stay at some of the Praslin Island Hotels there on it’s second largest island.

The Northern coast of the island, protected against the wind, Trou aux Biches, named after the typical fishermen’s village it is nestled in, has acquired a reputation bordering on the myth when it comes to hospitality benchmarks. It incarnates the ideal romantic hideaway with a picture-perfect 2-km powder-white beach, a startling blue lagoon that stretches as far as the eye can see and magnificent sunsets that defy all exotic standards and set the water on fire. A double-promise of authenticity and escape.

Trou aux Biches is a major tourist resort in the northwest of Mauritius. it is located on the Indian Ocean coast of the Pamplemousses region, to the south of the headland of Pointe aux Canonniers, 15 kilometres north of the national capital Port Louis.

Relaxed Trou aux Biches and the neighbouring village of Mont Choisy are fast-developing tourist destinations full of people seeking better beaches than Grand Baie while staying nearby for activities and restaurants. Trou aux Biches (The Does’ Wateringhole) enjoys gorgeous white-sand beaches shaded by casuarina trees, continuing almost unbroken to sleepy Mont Choisy, a charming spot with more great beaches leading up along the gently curving bay to Pointe aux Canonniers, one of the most fashionable spots in the country with a great selection of accommodation and dining options.

The lagoon, sheltered from the prevailing winds, provides great swimming, while the variety and abundance of marine life coupled with good visibility makes for some excellent snorkelling and diving.

There’s no doubt that the ongoing development boom here has rather robbed the area of its quiet, unspoilt feel, but it’s still cheaper and far less hectic than Grand Baie. Even the beaches are pleasantly uncrowded during the week, although there’s fierce competition for picnic spots at weekends.

Things to Do in Trou aux Biches:

Blue Penny Museum
Port Louis
Museums and art
The museum’s name is no mistake, and it does indeed have on display some exceptional old stamps (including the famous 1847 Post Office). We can’t recommend highly enough a visit to the Blue Penny Museum for its wonderful collections illustrating the history of Mauritius and its capital through engravings, maps, photographs and paintings. A trip back in time, from the island’s discovery to the present day, evoking along the way the legend of Paul and Virginie.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden
Port Louis
Nature and gardens
Pamplemousse botanical garden -as it is commonly known- is truly extraordinary. Locate a map and start exploring this tropical paradise begun in the 18C by the king’s intendant, Pierre Poivre. Its paths and pools are adorned with the colours and luxuriant foliage of many plants, from teak, mahogany and talipot palms to water lilies, lotuses and spice plants. The site also contains Mon Plaisir castle, a vast colonial home built by the English in the 19C. A pleasure for the senses!

L’Aventure du sucre
Port Louis
Museums and art
This museum, housed in the former Beau Plan sugar factory, is a must for learning about the history of the island and sugarcane. The fascinating tour, both fun and pedagogical, focuses on six themes: the birth of the island; sugar throughout the ages; the history of Mauritius (by far the most thorough display on the island); making sugar; the sugarcane pavilion (everything there is to know about the plant); the sugar routes (economic exchanges throughout history and the world).

Pointe aux Canonniers
Trou aux Biches
Nature and gardens
This propitious site west of Grand Baie, ideal for spotting fugitive slaves and English invaders, was a military camp for the French settlers. Now a plush residential area, the peninsula boasts several hotels with a magnificent view of the islands to the north. The Hôtel Le Canonnier has preserved a lighthouse, built in 1855 on the site of an old French fort. Its beam of light continued to sweep across the sea until 1932.

Maheswarnath Hindu Temple
Trou aux Biches
Religious buildings
This temple complex built in the 19C, decorated with colourful sculptures and topped by white domes, is only a few kilometres from the coast. It is certainly the most highly venerated temple on the island after the one at Grand Bassin, and exudes an atmosphere of great reverence.

Mont Choisy
Trou aux Biches
Nature and gardens
This magnificent arc-shaped beach north of Trou aux Biches has 3km of sand and nothing built on it so far. It is quiet during the week and more lively on Sundays, when Mauritian families come for picnics, siestas, ball playing and listening to music, and street vendors and snack bar vans do a week’s worth of business in the shade of the filao trees.

Children facilities
Bob Marlin Mini Club
The hostesses of the Bob Marlin Mini Club will gladly take care of your children aged between 3 and 12 years old and will ensure that their stay becomes a memorable one.

Entertainment
The graciousness of the Mauritian culture is unveiled to you through cultural dances, theme evenings and shows. Resident band every night, cultural dances, theme evenings, shows, casino (under separate management, open every night as from 8 p.m.) are among the night activities that Le Trou aux Biches has to offer.

Places to eat, drink and party:

L’Oasis

Featured at the restaurant are “Live cooking” exhibitions creating amazing interaction with guests and unveil a whole new world of exciting culinary discoveries from a variety of menus taken from around the world.

L’Espadon Beach
The location of this new restaurant offers a stunning view over the sea. L’Espadon serves light cuisine, based on traditional island specialities including fresh grilled seafood in an authentic tropical seaside ambience. L’Espadon is open for lunch and dinner “A la Carte”.

Coco de Mer
This excellent Seychellois restaurant serves up top-notch fish dishes, curries and all manner of seafood. Each meal is accompanied by a delicious selection of salads and a lentil soup, so you’re unlikely to leave empty. The Saturday evening buffet is excellent value.

Hidden Reef
This convivial, smart little addition to a great stretch of restaurants on the main road to Grand Baie has a beautifully lit courtyard for romantic al fresco dining and a sumptuous menu of freshly sourced seafood and fish. The chocolate brownies were unbelievably good. One of our favourites.

L’Assiette du Nord
A popular option where you can opt for the terrace or a slightly smarter dining area behind the fish tank partition. Seafood features strongly, served in Chinese, Indian and Creole style. Try fish cooked in banana leaf with madras sauce or perhaps prawns in garlic butter.

La Cravache d’Or
One of the best restaurants in Mauritius, La Cravache d’Or enjoys an absolutely gorgeous setting right on the beach, making it perfect for a romantic meal. The small daily-changing menu features meat and fish dishes, although vegetarians can be catered for. Reserve in advance at weekends, and at any time you’d like to sure of sitting at one of the sea-view tables.

La Marmite Mauricienne
This basic but sweet place down the road beyond L’Assiette du Nord has a pleasant outdoor feel, with lots of tables on the terrace (although sadly on a rather busy road). The menu is Mauritian, featuring mostly seafood, noodles and curries.
